Does Wescom Credit Union Use ChexSystems?

Updated

Credit unions often have lower fees than traditional banks, but they still review new members before opening accounts. Past overdrafts, unpaid balances, or accounts closed for misuse can affect that decision.

Wescom Financial serves eligible communities across Southern and Central California. Before applying, it helps to know how Wescom handles ChexSystems, who can become a member, and what its checking account offers.

Wescom Credit Union Uses ChexSystems

Wescom Credit Union uses ChexSystems when reviewing membership and deposit account applications. Negative information in your ChexSystems consumer report could make it harder to get approved.

A record doesn’t always lead to a denial. Wescom may consider the type of problem, when it happened, and whether you resolved any money owed. An old paid overdraft may receive different treatment from recent fraud or an unpaid negative balance.

Wescom can also deny an application when it can’t verify your identity or confirm that you meet its membership requirements. ChexSystems is part of the review, but it isn’t the only factor.

What Could Hurt Your Approval Chances?

Wescom doesn’t publish a list of ChexSystems entries that automatically result in denial. However, some records are more likely to cause concern than others.

These may include:

  • Unpaid negative balances: Money still owed to another bank or credit union may lower your chances.
  • Suspected fraud: Fraud-related entries can result in stricter review.
  • Forced account closures: An account closed by a financial institution may point to unresolved problems.
  • Repeated overdrafts: Several overdrafts or returned payments may show a pattern of account misuse.
  • Incorrect identity details: Information that doesn’t match your identification may stop the application.
  • Debt owed to Wescom: An unpaid balance from a previous Wescom account may need to be resolved first.

A paid ChexSystems record can remain on file, but the updated status shows that the debt is no longer outstanding.

Check Your ChexSystems Consumer Report First

Review your ChexSystems consumer report before applying. This gives you a chance to find errors and deal with unpaid balances before Wescom sees them.

Confirm that each account belongs to you and that the balances, dates, and closure reasons are correct. Watch for paid debts that still appear as unpaid or accounts that you don’t recognize.

Most accurate negative records can stay in a ChexSystems consumer report for five years. Paying a debt usually won’t remove the entry early, but the reporting financial institution should update the balance.

You can dispute information that’s inaccurate or incomplete. Include account statements, payment receipts, identity theft documents, or letters from the financial institution that support your claim.

Wescom Membership Comes with Eligibility Rules

Wescom is a credit union, so you must qualify for membership before opening a checking account. People who live, work, attend school, or worship in eligible parts of Southern and Central California may qualify. Membership may also be open through certain employers and partner organizations.

You establish membership by opening a Regular Savings Account with at least $1. Once you become a member, you can generally keep your membership if you move or change employers.

Meeting the eligibility rules doesn’t guarantee account approval. Wescom still reviews the application and confirms your identity.

Wescom Checking Has No Monthly Account Fee

Wescom offers one standard checking account with no monthly checking account fee. There’s also no minimum balance requirement for the checking account.

The account includes:

  • Debit card access: Use the card for purchases and ATM withdrawals.
  • Early direct deposit: Eligible deposits may post up to two days early.
  • Mobile deposits: Deposit qualifying checks through SnapDeposit.
  • Digital banking: Manage transfers, payments, alerts, and account activity online.
  • Fee-free ATMs: Access more than 30,000 Wescom and CO-OP Network ATMs.
  • No nonsufficient funds fees: Wescom doesn’t charge a fee when it returns a transaction for insufficient funds.

Paper statements currently cost $5, but the fee is waived when you enroll in electronic statements. It’s also waived for certain members, including primary account holders who are at least 60 and new members during their first 90 days.

These account terms are affordable, but Wescom is not a second chance credit union. Applicants still need to pass its account review.

Does Wescom Offer Second Chance Checking?

Wescom doesn’t advertise a separate second chance checking account. Its standard checking account may work for someone with an older or resolved ChexSystems entry, but the credit union doesn’t promise approval.

The lack of a monthly fee also shouldn’t be confused with relaxed screening. Low-cost checking describes the account’s pricing, not its approval requirements.

Call Wescom at 888-493-7266 before applying if you have a specific ChexSystems concern. Ask whether unpaid balances cause a denial and whether the credit union considers paid or older records.

A representative may explain the general policy, but they may not be able to give you a final answer until Wescom reviews your application.

What to Do if Wescom Denies Your Application

Ask whether ChexSystems affected the decision. When information from a consumer reporting company leads to a denial, you should receive a notice that identifies the company and explains how to request your consumer report.

Check the record that caused the problem before applying somewhere else. Dispute it if the account, balance, or closure reason is wrong.

When the information is accurate, contact the financial institution that reported it. Paying an outstanding balance may improve your options, even though the entry can remain in your ChexSystems consumer report.

You may also consider a bank that doesn’t use ChexSystems or an account with stated second chance approval standards.

Other Banks That Don’t Use ChexSystems

If you’ve been denied by Wescom, these alternatives can help you open a new account without a ChexSystems review.
